He plays for Essex, England's leading run-scorer in test cricket since he overtook David Gower's record at The Oval in 1993. He made his first-class debut 1973, and his England debut 1975. Banned for three years for captaining an unofficial England side to South Africa 1982, he went on to captain England on 34 occasions. He scored a world record match total of 456 runs against India 1990. In 1993 he joined the select band of cricketers to reach the milestone of 100 centuries. He became the fourth person to average 100 runs per innings in an English season and has appeared in more than 80 test matches.
